Everyone nowadays just doesn’t bother using Office Online. Everybody uses Office, the real desktop application that you actually have to pay for. And it seems like they don’t care whether they have to pay for it or not. But some people just go with Office Online, the new-founded Office that you can run in a browser.

As you know, the latest version of Office (Office 365) added the confusing world of pay-forever subscriptions, which can really make you barf when you talk about pay-forever subscriptions. That’s why Office has become more expensive in the last couple of years. Still, most people use the real Office desktop application. But some people are smart and use Office Online once in a while.

Office Online is the free version of the real Office. You just load up office.com and BOOM! You’ve arrived at Office Online. Office Online removes some features of the real office, of course. And the ribbon is Simplified, in every application except PowerPoint and Excel. The Simplified ribbon is absolutely HORRIBLE, which is the main reason why most people are using the real Office desktop application. There’s also no smooth cursor feature in ANY of the Office online apps, which is kind of bad, because the smooth cursor feature is a feature that you can only get with Microsoft Office products.

Office Online often removes a whole lot of hidden features that you won’t know about until you really start using Office Online. Then you’ll be like WHERE IS THIS FEATURE?!???? and you’ll be looking for it, even though in the free version of Office they removed that feature. And that really is what bothers most customers. Which is why everybody uses Office, the real desktop application.

In the end, the real Office desktop application is the ideal one, but if you’re not super crazy about all the secret little features of Office 365, then you can go with Office Online, the free version of the pay-forever Office 365.
