Spoiler alert: the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 ended up winning, in part because it was 5 years newer than the MacBook Pro, and also because it just had much better hardware compared to the MacBook (I mean, who needs a laptop with 8GB of ram these days?) and it was at a much lower cost. Unfortunately, the reliability was not so great on the Lenovo, because the touchpad went out on month 8 (which I documented in a previous post) while it took 3 years for the MacBook Pro to develop a problem (the horrible butterfly keyboard going out) and we didn’t have any other issues with it. So, if you’re buying a laptop under $1000, get the Lenovo IdeaPad 5–just watch out for touchpad problems and be ready to drop money on it at any time.
