The Microsoft Surface Pro 3 comes with a mediocre Intel processor called the i5-4300U. It’s the 4th generation of the i5, it’s code-named Haswell, and it has some secret features that I did not know until I visited the ark.intel.com page for it.
The i5-4300U is not exactly what I’d call a performance processor. With 2 cores and 4 threads, it’s not exactly powerful–wait a second, this thing has more threads than cores! And do you know what that means? Hyper-threading. On an i5 fourth generation.
It’s pretty crazy, but it’s true: Whenever an intel processor has more threads than cores, it gets hyper-threading: a technology developed by Intel that’s supposed to be only for the i7s and higher. And the new i7s at that! But that’s not all: It also has Intel vPro technology. vPro?!? on an Intel Core i5-4300U? If you don’t know what vPro is, it’s a security and stabilization platform made for commercial and business processors. Is the i5-4300U a business processor? Even some of the new i7s don’t have that, and according to Intel’s website, vPro is new!
Other than that, though, the processor is pretty bad. Its maximum clock speed is 2.90GHz, which doesn’t even compare to some of our newer i5, i7, and i9 processors, and it has only 2 cores. Today, 2 cores makes you think of 2006, when the Core 2 Duo was released and the days of Intel Pentium.
I have discovered many secrets of Intel CPUs from looking at their specs website, and I have noticed that ark.intel.com is the best place to go if you want to find Intel processor specifications.
Scuiridae: Yeah, the processor is pretty bad. Order, order, order and ORDER!!!
