Microsoft’s done it again: they’ve brutally messed up an important, game-changing (no pun intended) part of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. In a past post, we discussed how absurdly performance-intensive Microsoft Flight Simulator was. That was bad enough; now, after we’ve solved that problem by upgrading to a more powerful computer, we ran into another issue. Upon launching the game, MFS 2020 threw an error (shown below), stating that the Xbox Live account I was trying to use to play the game was currently linked to another Live account that had purchased the game and was also currently logged in on the computer.

The dreaded MFS 2020 error that prohibits you from playing the game

This meant that I wouldn’t be able to continue into the game, for in this case “online services” means flying planes, using ATC, and so on. This was extremely annoying. What was worse, however, was the fact that Microsoft requires you to open a support ticket on ZenDesk in order to have any hope of getting this issue resolved. Apparently, Microsoft doesn’t want users trying to fix the issue themselves–probably for security. Then, once you bowed down to the fact that Microsoft’s systems are horribly designed, you needed to input your Steam ID64–not only that, but the one of the account you were trying to unlink, which requires you to dig through the trenches of the Steam menus to get it to show the Steam URL bar. What a mess!

After a lot of wrangling, we got the support ticket submitted. Fortunately, praise Microsoft, they responded promptly, after about a day and a half of waiting. Everything was very smooth, they didn’t ask for any further information, and everything now works perfectly.

If it’s so simple to unlink an account in this fashion, why doesn’t Microsoft just let users do it themselves? Sigh.
