Remember that post a week or two ago about how the latest Microsoft 365 interface was really, really bad? Well, Microsoft’s totally taken it to a whole new level now, at least for us lowly one-time license purchasers. Yesterday my UI was changed back to the old one, the one that existed before Microsoft came in and fouled up the waters with the “Office has a fresh look” update. Well, I went to open OneNote, which had not gone back to the old UI yet–it was still on the new one, which I found puzzling. Then, I opened Word back up, curious to see if the rest of the office apps had changed as well, and sure enough, everything had gone back to the new UI.

Now the funny thing about the one day I had the old UI on was that the quick access toolbar was mysteriously missing. Instead of being at the top of the window, it was instead hanging from the bottom of the ribbon. It was like Microsoft was giving me a taste of the new UI. Even worse, there was no option to switch back to the new look at all. But things are about to get even crazier. When it switched back to the new UI, it added the quick access toolbar back, which I thought was supposed to be removed with the new UI. What resulted was a duplication of the standard items on the far left of the top bar, as you can see in the screenshot. I had a duplicated AutoSave switch, and a duplicated manual save button. Chaos ensued; that’s when I seriously began to consider switching to something else other than Microsoft 365.

But then just earlier today it switched back to the old look again, and to get the new one back I just opened up OneNote and there you go. Legend has it Office is still switching back and forth between UI options to this day.
