The Synology DiskStation DS1010+ described in the previous post is now getting files poured onto it; 4% storage is used (60GB out of 2TB.) I’ve put nearly 130 voice recordings onto it, 180 videos, several documents and folders, and about 80 song files. I’ve cleared about 75GB off of my phone, which has been complaining about full storage for a while now. And even with all of those files onto the DiskStation, it’s still only at 4% storage used. And with the latest DSM update released just a few days ago, DSM 6.2.4 Update 5, the DiskStation is now even more secure than ever. The instant I updated it, it started asking me to perform a malware scan, which I did, and that uncovered an issue involving an SSH port that needed to be changed from the default 22, which I promptly resolved. The system is now reported “Good.”

All of the disks, while quite old (52,000 power-on hours) are holding up well. The S.M.A.R.T info reports no unallocated sectors or bad sectors, and the whole DiskStation status is Healthy. To better manage my audio and video, I’ve gone on to install the Audio Center and Video Center packages, in addition to the DS File, DS Video, and DS Audio apps. Perhaps Photo Station and DS Photo is next?

I’ve built up a method for transferring videos off of the phone and onto the DiskStation. First, on the phone, I select all of the files I want to transfer over. Then, I AirDrop them to the MacBook, and then from the MacBook, I copy them onto the DiskStation (which is set as a network location in Finder.) I also have mapped the network drives on two computers, with one running Windows 11 and the other running Windows 10. Finally, I go into Video Station and rename the videos according to what they actually are, not just a bunch of “IMG_5628.MOV” files. This last part is probably the most time-consuming aspect of it all, though if the files amount to anything over 10GB, the AirDrop process and the copying process can take up to 15 minutes.

Overall, the DiskStation still seems to be working well–keep in tune for more updates on the DiskStation over the months.
