Microsoft Word has long offered the feature to add watermarks to your document–for example, if a certain document is confidential, you can apply the “CONFIDENTIAL” watermark, and that word will be applied to every page of your document in grey text. This feature is helpful if you really want to make an impact on people who are reading–especially if you are going to print it out. This helps alert readers to the fact that “oh, this document’s confidential! Okay,” whereas if you just told them it was confidential, they probably wouldn’t remember that, and then they would try to steal the page and extract as much information out of it as possible and tell everyone about it etc, etc.

That’s why watermarks are helpful. In addition, in Word, you can create your own custom watermark that says, for example, “Baa baa sheep,” or “This document to be prosecuted”. (Those are just example options, it’s best to not give your boss a document with a “Baa baa sheep” watermark on it, or the latter.)

This feature is applicable to all office versions–the one in the picture features Word 2016.
