In the years 2017-2019, the keyboards on Apple laptops were just so bad. The “Butterfly” design that Apple created used flat keys that were not only prone to severe failure (in the first revision) but slowed down your typing by around 25% and caused a lot of keystroke problems. The feel also created issues when entering passwords, because on the first revision of the Butterfly keyboard, keys were unreliable, and you never knew whether the keyboard was acting up or not.
On our 2017 MacBook Pro, the Butterfly keyboard (which was the first revision, unfortunately) started doubling, most severely on the 1 key, and very rarely on the “N” key. Also, the caps lock button didn’t work and failed to light up half the time, and eventually it got to the point where it was causing problems typing critical and valuable things, like passwords. It got so annoying that it had to be taken to the Apple repair service.
In order to get the keyboard repaired, the touchpad, the speakers, and a couple other things had to be replaced. This also solved the problem of the touchpad not clicking properly when applied full pressure, and the keyboard was also replaced with the latest revision Butterfly keyboard, which seemed to have slightly whiter keyboard backlighting. In the end, the keyboard replace had solved all the keyboard problems, plus one other issue.
After all this disaster, Apple has finally reverted to their orthodox keyboard design in their 2020 MacBook lineup…fortunately for their customers.
