On some occasions, you may want to compress those large PNG or JPG while still maintaining transparency and color. For a while there has been no way to do this…until I discovered TinyPNG. TinyPNG allows you to compress images that are either JPG and PNG for free. For example, if you image is around 3 MB, then you can probably get it down to about 800-900 KB. Of course, it depends on the image itself.
PNGs can just get so large. One particular file I ran into was nearly 4 MB. The second I saw it I ran to the TinyPNG site and compressed it down to nearly 900 KB, while still maintaining the great quality of the image.
However, they give you a 20 image limit (which I will probably not reach, but some people may) and a 5 MB limit for each image, a limit that I may soon outrun. Now, if you want these limits to go away, you will have to pay a subscription (which, why?)
This is how the problem of large PNG images were solved (and JPGs as well). TinyPNG reports they’re working on implementing compression for other types of images, such as BMP and JFIF, but for now it’s just PNG and JPGs.
