This all happened about a week ago, and this is all related to OneDrive (Microsoft’s cloud client.) And this post will explain probably why you shouldn’t use OneDrive long-term.
Windows Explorer on Windows 10 Pro was open, with OneDrive’s home folder open. I was going to open a jpeg file that was situated within the Pictures folder of OneDrive in order to move it to the desktop. I was hoping this would be an easy job, and that nothing would go wrong. Well, something did. As soon as I clicked on the Pictures folder, the explorer locked up. The cursor showed a loading symbol, which indicated it was doing something, but I thought it would take forever for it to open the folder, and sure enough, 5 minutes later, it still hadn’t opened the folder, or showed any sign of functionality.
I tried different folders in the OneDrive. The same thing happened. I tried folders outside the OneDrive folder, like the Downloads folder on Windows. It worked perfectly. Instantly I knew OneDrive had a problem. I went online, and saw that nothing was wrong with it. I restarted Windows Explorer several times, with the same result each time.
There was no known solution to this problem after looking online, and the only visible thing to do was uninstall and reinstall OneDrive. After that action was completed, everything was back to normal.
And this is why OneDrive isn’t the greatest cloud client. It really isn’t. Windows Explorer may have been the culprit, but I’m sure that OneDrive had been wigging out, and had caused the errors in file explorer. Microsoft could probably stand a chance to improve their cloud client, because right now, it’s got some problems.
Before this happened, OneDrive was working fine, and nothing locked up. OneDrive’s on the Free Plan (see my post on User Accounts, Passwords, and Product Tiers (and why they’re so annoying.)
I wasn’t about to look into the properties of the folder or anything, so the obvious choice was to uninstall and reinstall OneDrive. I guess every once in a while you just have to do that, even though Microsoft claims their cloud client is “the best ever”.
