The world of Windows Activation can prevent you from doing anything in the way of personalization–but there are ways to get around some of it.
The taskbar was very recently locked down. In Windows 7 and 8, it wasn’t locked down as bad as this. But–the secret menu that appears when you right-click can answer some of your problems–but not all.
By right-clicking the taskbar, you’ll see an option called search. There’ll be a little arrow pointing right. This option is one of the locked down ones in the taskbar settings area. So, that’s a way around the search icon. And the same with the Cortana button.
