Synology is the most common NAS brand. NAS is Network Attached Storage, which basically means all of your data is on a disk that is connected to the internet. Synology is a company which makes those NAS boxes, and they have a whole lineup of them. But the DS218+ is just the best.
The DS218+ has just been released. In fact, it’s the latest DiskStations Synology has released. That’s why you see tons of those little guys everywhere. It’s the most common home NAS. What’s good about it is that it has decent storage space, which is the most important part about buying a NAS. You need to have just the right amount of space. And I wouldn’t recommend buying a 4 or 5-bay DiskStation if you’re only going to use it for small jobs. And the DS218+ is a 2-bay, meaning it has 2 drives.
Depending on the size of the drive, you could make the thing have 30 GB of storage (if you had two 15-GB disks) but I wouldn’t recommend that, because, if again, you’re only using for small jobs. And it’s not just about the storage, either. 2 disks is just the right amount of storage on a home user’s NAS, but the price is another story. The DS218+ is getting close the naaah side. Which is why if you’re only (again) using for small jobs I wouldn’t recommend going any higher than this model. The DS218+ is an upgrade from the plain DS218, and the DS218+ is, of course, more expensive, and has more capabilities.
The price of the DS218+ has a cost of $247.00 on Amazon, which for most people is a fairly reasonable price. But there are some people out there which $247 is $900 for them. And that’s where it just comes down to the price, but only like 2% of our readers are people who think $247 is $600 more than it actually is.
The CPU in the DS218+ is actualy DECENT. If you go any lower than this model then you get poopy CPUs and bad RAM. And that’s never good, even sometimes for small jobs. The DS218+ isn’t known for being bad, so it’s not an infamous DiskStation. With an Intel Celeron J3355 in it, there’s pretty much nothing to worry about. And of course, the RAM’s 2GB, the usual. Of course, that’s barely anything, but the RAM in the DS218+ is REMOVABLE AND CHANGEABLE. On older lower-end DiskStations like the DS213j the RAM is inreplaceable. So you can put up to about 8 GB of ram in the DS218+.
So that’s why the DS218+ is just the optimal home-users Synology NAS. If you’re looking for a fairly-affordable NAS for home users, then choose the Synology DS218+.
