A photo of LibreOffice Writer with a blank document open.

You can see that LibreOffice doesn't exactly look brand-new.

LibreOffice and Microsoft Office are both pretty similar, but there are some changes that you might not know about. Office is closed-source and LibreOffice is open-source, which already gives you a clue that LibreOffice isn’t going to cost anything.

Sometimes, if you see something with an unusually low price tag, or something with a tag that says FREE, then you’re probably going to get suspicious of that thing. If that thing is usually worth like $400, and you see it on sale for $102, then you’re probably going to get suspicious of how the quality of the thing is. It’s kind of the same thing with LibreOffice.

If Microsoft office is closed-source, then it’s got to have some level of goodness. LibreOffice, on the other hand, is completely free, which leaves you in suspicion if you’ve never tried it before. Until you see some pictures of it, you won’t know if it’s good or not. If there are no reviews or pictures (this is very rare) for the product, then you’d be better off not buying it. Office 365 has just brought many improvements to it, but the cost has shot up–and not only that–you’re going to have to pay monthly or yearly, but in other words, you have to pay forever.

MS Office isn’t the type of office suite that would greatly dissapoint you. Office 365 starts at $69.99 per year, and its maximum cost is $99.99 per year. So, there’s basically a $30 window of cost. LibreOffice is completely free, and it looks bare and old, but Office 365 has all-new tab designs and this smooth cursor feature that makes it seem like it’s far ahead of all the other office suites.

LibreOffice’s UI is just, well–bare and normal. It’s very pixely, and it looks so 2005. Office looks like 2022, even though we’re not there yet. Microsoft has really been shooting the prices, and shooting the user interface lately. Well, I guess if you’re serious on new UIs, then Office is the one to choose. And MS Office is WAY more popular than LibreOffice, because it has (1) all the tools you need (Word, Access, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint) and (2) the UI is ahead of our time and it has a glossy smooth-cursor feature. If you’re really wanting to see the brand-new Office UIs, then choose Office 365. But if you don’t want to pay for an Office suite with a brand-new UI and a smooth cursor feature and a cloud client, then choose Office. And almost everybody chooses Office these days.
